At a glance.
Notion
Notion combines team docs with databases and project workflows. Knit focuses on keeping shared knowledge useful, with personal drafts, bulk review, and page maturity built into the way you work.
Confluence
Confluence connects team knowledge with Jira and the wider Atlassian setup. Knit puts drafts, reviews, and page care together in Home. We’re aiming for less to configure and less to maintain.
GitBook
GitBook is built around publishing documentation, with a visual editor and multi-page change reviews. Knit is centered on a team’s working knowledge: who looks after it, how settled it is, and what needs review.

All plans means included in every plan. Free means included in the free tier. Free beta will require a paid tier afterward. Custom means you configure it; Not listed means no equivalent native feature confirmed.
Visual editor
Write formatted pages without working in source code.
Knit: Available on all plans. Slash menus, Markdown shortcuts, and conversion of pasted Markdown or HTML source.
Notion: Block editor on all plans. Free team workspaces have a block limit.
Confluence: Collaborative editor on all plans. Free workspaces have user and storage limits.
GitBook: Visual editor on all plans. Git sync is optional; real-time collaboration requires Premium or above.
Personal drafts
Each person can edit their own draft of an existing published page without changing the published version.
Knit: A separate draft per person on all plans; published content stays unchanged until publication.
Notion: No equivalent personal draft version confirmed. Private pages control access; suggested edits propose changes inside a shared page.
Confluence: In Confluence Cloud, a new page draft is private until shared. Unpublished edits to an existing published page are shared with its editors, not separate per-person drafts. Live docs update directly.
GitBook: Change requests branch a set of content and can be shared. They are not a personal draft attached to each person and page.
Approval before publishing
Ask another person to approve draft changes before they become published content.
Knit: Teammate approval and page approval rules are included on every plan. Editors and Admins approve the exact draft; later edits need review again.
Notion: No equivalent draft-publication approval workflow confirmed. Accepting individual suggested edits is a separate capability.
Confluence: Page approvals require Premium or Enterprise. Space settings can require approval before new pages are published; live docs and blog posts are excluded.
GitBook: Review/approve edits and merge rules require Premium, Ultimate, or Enterprise. Merge rules can enforce review before merging a change request.
Bulk review
Inspect changes across multiple pages in one flow, then publish or approve eligible work.
Knit: Inspect changes across current drafts and publish eligible own drafts on all plans. Grouped review and teammate approval are included on every plan. Required approval rules still apply.
Notion: No equivalent multi-page draft review/decision flow confirmed. Per-page text suggestions do not constitute bulk review.
Confluence: No equivalent multi-page draft review/decision flow confirmed in native approvals. Page approvals are individual; Marketplace extensions are outside this comparison.
GitBook: A change request groups edits across pages with a diff navigator. Change requests are on all plans; teammate review/approval requires Premium or above.
Page caretakers
Name people responsible for looking after a page, separately from the last editor.
Knit: Looked after by is optional on all plans. Without named caretakers, the creator/editor is shown as context, not automatically assigned stewardship.
Notion: Wiki page owners on all plans. The creator is the default owner; ownership can be changed.
Confluence: Page owners can be transferred to another person on all plans.
GitBook: No equivalent per-page caretaker field confirmed in the linked collaboration documentation.
Page maturity
Show how settled the team considers a page. A maturity stage does not verify its facts.
Knit: Built-in Early, On track, and Stable stages on all plans. Maturity is separate from publication and review.
Notion: A custom Select property on Free database pages can represent maturity. This needs your own setup; page verification is a different feature.
Confluence: Content statuses on all plans can represent maturity if you define and use them that way. They are general status labels, not a built-in maturity model.
GitBook: No equivalent per-page maturity model confirmed in the linked documentation.
Freshness checks and reminders
Confirm a published page is still current, record who checked and when, and optionally set a date to check again.
Knit: Human review and approval are available today and can include checking accuracy. Dated freshness checks and reminders are planned: confirm a published page is still current without editing, or explicitly confirm while approving its publication.
Notion: Wiki owners can verify pages on Free and receive expiry reminders. Verification outside wikis requires Business or Enterprise.
Confluence: No equivalent expiring factual-verification signal confirmed. Content statuses and approval decisions have separate meanings.
GitBook: No equivalent expiring factual-verification signal confirmed in the linked documentation.
AI writing assistant
Use a built-in assistant to write or edit content.
Knit: Every plan includes Knit Assistant within its AI usage allowance. It writes in drafts; people decide what to publish or send for review.
Notion: Notion Agent on Business and Enterprise. Free and Plus offer limited AI trials.
Confluence: Rovo writing/editing on Standard, Premium, and Enterprise, subject to AI settings and allowances.
GitBook: GitBook Agent on all plans; Free is limited to 10 messages per week. Paid plans include it subject to usage conditions.
Saved writing guidance
Keep writing instructions for the assistant between sessions. The scope differs by tool.
Knit: Shared site/workspace writing guides are planned.
Notion: Notion Agent keeps personal instructions and reusable shared skills. Business and Enterprise admins can set workspace default skills; members can enable automatic use.
Confluence: Configured Rovo agent instructions can include tone and behavior. Rovo requires a paid plan; these instructions belong to an agent.
GitBook: GitBook Agent can follow a site style guide. Agent limits follow the plan, including the Free message cap.

Where Knit fits.
Knit is worth a look if you’re starting a shared knowledge base, or keeping your current wiki useful has become a job of its own. If your team already has a setup that works, there may be little reason to move.
- Write and find things Pages, folders, tags, and search. Write visually with slash menus and Markdown shortcuts, or paste Markdown or HTML source and keep editing.
- Know where a page stands Looked after by names the people caring for a page. Early, On track, and Stable show how settled the team considers it.
- Check changes before they go live Personal drafts, change summaries, and before/after views. Bulk review in Home lets you inspect changes across pages, then publish or approve eligible drafts. History records assistant contributions.
We’re aiming for less to configure and less to maintain, so everyone can contribute without becoming an expert in the tool.
Human review is available today. Freshness checks and reminders are planned: confirm a published page is still current, even without edits, and choose when to check again. You’ll also be able to confirm this while approving changes.
Shared writing guides are planned. Section summaries are being tested privately.

Knit’s beta is free, with no credit card needed. Each site has one plan, with allowances for people and workspaces. Final paid prices haven’t been published, so we can’t claim a price advantage yet. You’re never charged automatically.
Change summaries are included on all plans. Tag suggestions are planned for all plans too. Every plan includes the AI writing assistant within its usage allowance.
