Backups and recovery

Understand Knit's backups, keep your own portable copy, and get help recovering work.

Knit keeps service backups for disaster recovery. You can also download a Site or workspace export to keep a portable copy of your current content somewhere you control.

How Knit backs up your work

Our database provider supplies daily database backups. Knit also makes a separate encrypted daily recovery point containing the database, stored images and attachments, including private attachments. These recovery copies are kept separately from the files used by the live service.

A separate verification job checks each daily recovery point. Monitoring alerts the Knit team to failed or missed checks. Recovery points are protected from deletion for seven days and kept for thirty days.

Changes made after the latest successful backup may not be recoverable.

Keep your own copy

As a Site Admin with Admin access to every included workspace, open Settings → Site → General → Export site. Download the ZIP when it is ready. For a single workspace, its Admins can use Export workspace in that workspace's General settings.

Ready downloads are available for seven days. Save the ZIP before it expires and keep it somewhere you control. A new export replaces your previous download in Knit; it does not remove a copy you already saved.

Exports contain current documents, organization metadata and stored assets. They omit older versions, private draft copies, review and change logs, and account or membership restoration. Externally hosted images retain their links, so their availability still depends on the external host. Each workspace has its own snapshot time.

You can preview and import an export. Eligible changes publish as new versions, identical documents stay unchanged, and changes needing review remain in drafts. Import does not replay history or restore accounts and permissions. Keep an unedited copy of the original ZIP before changing its Markdown.

Ask for recovery help

Contact us with the Site name, affected workspace or page, what happened, and approximately when you last saw the expected content. We can check the available recovery options. Use the contact form rather than posting private content on the public roadmap.
