Tables

Insert a table, add and remove rows and columns, and format cells.

Insert a table

  • Type /table and press Enter for a three-by-three table with a header row.
  • Or select Insert table in the toolbar and choose a size from the grid.

Press Tab to move to the next cell and ⇧Tab to go back. Pressing Tab in the last cell adds a new row.

An on-call rota with a header row and one cell selected. Above it, the table toolbar: alignment, Add row, Add column, and Table options.

Example. A rota like the one above takes three columns: Week, Primary, and Backup. Type the headings in the first row, then one row per week:

Add rows and columns

On a computer, point at the table and select a + on its edge, between two rows or columns, to insert one there. When your cursor is in a table, the table toolbar also offers Add row and Add column, and under Structure, Add row above and Add column left.

On a computer, point at a column border to see Drag to resize column, then drag the border. A table that fits the page stays within it when you release the border. Wide tables scroll sideways.

Select rows, columns, and cells

Select the handle beside a row or above a column (Select row, Select column) to select all of it. Drag across cells to select several.

Format cells

With cells selected, use the table toolbar to:

  • align text with Align left, Align center, or Align right;
  • set a Background color;
  • Merge selected cells, or Split merged cell;
  • Clear selected cells.

Right-click a cell for the same options in a menu.

Delete rows, columns, or the table

Use Delete row, Delete column, or Delete table in the table toolbar or the right-click menu. You can also select every cell and press Delete.

On a phone

Tap into a table while editing, and the toolbar above the keyboard switches to table controls. Tap Formatting to go back to text formatting. Wide tables scroll sideways.
