Export a Site or workspace

Prepare a portable .zip with Expressive Markdown, original document data and stored assets.

Keep a portable copy of your Site or a single workspace as a ZIP containing readable Expressive Markdown, original document data and stored assets. Export is available on every plan, including when a workspace is over a limit. You can leave Settings while Knit prepares it.

You can import the archive after editing its Expressive Markdown. Eligible changes publish as new versions; unchanged documents stay untouched, and work needing review remains in drafts.

Choose the workspace you want to copy before opening Settings. Its name appears in the export section so you can check the scope.

Export a whole Site

  1. Open Settings → Site → General.
  2. Under Export site, check the Site name, then select Export site.
  3. Return to the same section to see progress. Knit also emails the account that requested it when preparation finishes.
  4. When it is ready, select Download site .zip and save the file somewhere you control.

This includes the default workspace and every named workspace. Sign in with the account that requested it, retaining Site Admin access and Admin access to every included workspace. Each workspace has its own snapshot time; the ZIP is not a single simultaneous snapshot of the whole Site.

If the status is Partially prepared, some workspaces could not be exported. Select Retry export when offered to prepare the complete archive.

Export one workspace

You need Admin access to the workspace you want to export.

  1. Open the workspace, then Settings → General.
  2. Under Export workspace, select Export workspace.
  3. Return to see whether it is queued, preparing or ready. Knit also emails the account that requested it when preparation finishes.
  4. Select Download .zip and save the file somewhere you control.

For the default workspace, use Default workspace only on Site General while you are in that workspace.

Download availability

The download uses a readable name, such as site_space-planet_20261019T173000Z.zip or workspace_project-notes_20261019T173000Z.zip. The timestamp is the request time in UTC. Extracting the archive uses that same readable name for its folder.

Sign in with the account that requested the export. You must still have the Admin access required for its scope. A ready download is available for 7 days; Settings shows its expiry with your local timezone. After it expires, request a new export.

The seven-day limit applies to downloading from Knit. A ZIP you have already saved remains yours to keep. See Backups and recovery for how exports fit alongside Knit's backups.

The snapshot time identifies the copy you receive. Edits made after that point belong in a later export.

Use the files

Original file attachments are included with the exported pages, with relative links, filenames and file types preserved. File attachments explains adding and browsing them.

The archive contains Markdown pages and assets linked by relative paths, so you can keep them together when reading offline. The original structured document files preserve content that a Markdown conversion cannot represent. Keep them with the Markdown.

Pages use their readable paths, such as pages/guides/getting-started.md. Images for that page live in pages/guides/assets/getting-started/ and use relative links. Links to other exported pages use their readable paths too. Document IDs remain in frontmatter so changing a filename does not change its identity during import. README.txt explains the archive's directories. records/ contains current workspace, folder and tag information. New exports contain current documents, not older versions or internal change and review logs.

A Site ZIP groups these files under workspaces/<workspace-slug>/. Its site-export.json identifies the source Site, export date and each workspace's snapshot. Relative Markdown links work between folders and between workspaces; keep the ZIP's directory structure together when reading or editing it.

Start with manifest.json for the source Site and workspace names and IDs, the export date in UTC, and the file index. The export date identifies the content snapshot. The index identifies conversion limitations and any images that still depend on an external host. Stored workspace assets are copied into the archive; externally hosted images keep their external links.

If preparation or email fails

Select Retry export when a failed export offers it, or Discard export if you no longer need that failed preparation. You can also cancel a queued or preparing export. These actions do not change your workspace content.

If the notification email fails, a ready export still has Download .zip in Settings. You do not need to prepare another copy just to download it.

When your export is ready

Knit emails you a download action and a readable expiration date in UTC. Sign in with the same account that requested the export. The email opens your export in Settings; the ZIP remains available for seven days from the time it is ready.

Settings shows your current export, with one ZIP download and its expiry. A new export replaces your previous export for that Site or workspace, including its download link. Other administrators’ exports and separate workspace exports are independent. If a request fails, your previous export stays available. Older email links open your current export.
