Folders and pages

Create pages and folders, arrange them in the sidebar, pin favorites, and give pages icons.

On a phone, page and folder names stay beside their visible options buttons. Page maturity and publishing share the tags row rather than crowding the title. Open Page actions → Page info… to see who created or last edited a page; Version history and Copy published link are in the same menu.

The sidebar shows your pages and folders as one tree under Pages. Folders open and close to show what's inside. At each level, a child page or folder icon starts just beyond its parent folder's icon. Creating, moving, and deleting need permission to edit.

Open Home or Pages to give that sidebar section the available space. Opening one closes the other; the last open section stays open. Opening a section keeps the page you're reading in place. The page tree scrolls inside Pages, so both section headers stay in reach. Both headers use the same plain row and light divider, matching the line above Settings. Their labels, icons, and carets stay neutral; the caret direction shows which section is open. For you and Activity use small dots beside labels aligned with Home. The selected destination has a faint purple background and purple text, with the same label weight as its neighbors. Page icons use a neutral color. These two rows have compact vertical padding; touch screens keep a comfortable tap target. Small icons on Home distinguish drafts, review requests, possible issues and recent publishing activity.

In the page tree, hovering over, focusing, or selecting a row gives its existing page icon its stage color: sage for Early, deep amber for On track, or deep espresso brown for Stable. Otherwise it stays gray. Page and folder names use the normal text color on hover, focus and selection; a faint purple background marks the selected row. Icon color shows the published stage even when a draft proposes another stage. The page's stage control names the stage. Page options comes last, in the same column as Folder options.

Folders you have opened keep their visible pages in place while Knit refreshes the list. Knit also gets the next level of folders ready in the background. Page title updates keep your keyboard focus on the same tree row.

On desktop, hover over a long page or folder name, or reach it with the keyboard, to read the rest of the name. It pauses at the end and repeats while you stay on the row. It stops just before the row actions and fades before its icon. A name that fits stays still. On a touch screen, scrolling the sidebar keeps names still.

Create a page or folder

On mobile Home and folder overviews, tap + (Create page or folder), choose Location, then New page or New folder. Search by a folder's full path to place the new item there. The floating button stays off page reading and editing screens; creation remains available in navigation.

  • Select + (Create page or folder) beside the site name at the top of the sidebar, then New page or New folder. New items go at the top level.
  • To create inside a folder, open Folder options (the ⋯ on the folder's row) and choose New page or New folder.
  • On a phone, the round + button does the same. While you're reading a page, it creates the new item in that page's folder.

After a page is saved, it opens without waiting for the sidebar to refresh. After a folder is saved, its create dialog closes; the folder appears as the sidebar refreshes. If that refresh fails, Knit tells you to reload the page.

Folders can hold other folders up to four levels deep.

Team handbook contains two pages and a Policies folder. Security policy and Expenses sit inside Policies; Decision log is a separate top-level page.

Move pages and folders

Drag and drop. Hover over a page or folder in the sidebar and drag the grip handle beside its row. On touch screens, the handle stays visible. A line shows where it will land, including between a page and a folder. Drop it onto a folder to put it first inside that folder. Hold it over a closed folder for a moment to open it. Clicking a desktop grip without dragging does not start a move.

Keyboard and touch. Focus a grip and press Space or Enter, or tap it on a touch screen, to choose a destination without dragging. Use Up and Down to choose a row, Right to place inside a folder, then Enter to place it. Select Cancel on the source row, activate its grip again, or press Escape to leave without moving anything.

Without dragging. Open Page options or Folder options (the ⋯ on the row) and choose:

  • Move up or Move down to change the order;
  • Move… (for a page) or Move folder… (for a folder), then under Destination type part of the folder's name and choose it from the list. Folders show their full path, such as Team handbook / Policies. Select Move.

The sidebar with the Team handbook folder open, and Page options open for Time off: Pin to top, Duplicate, Move up, Move down, Move…, and Delete.

The Page options button stays highlighted while its menu is open.

Rename, duplicate, and delete

  • Rename a page: open it and edit the title, then publish.
  • Rename a folder: Folder options → Rename….
  • Duplicate a page: Page options → Duplicate. The copy's title ends in "(copy)".
  • Move a page to trash: Page options → Move to trash, or Move to trash in the ⋯ menu at the top of the page. This also works for unpublished drafts. Confirm with Move to trash. If the page is open for editing, Knit saves your draft first. A save error keeps the page in place and appears in the confirmation so you can retry. Trashed pages disappear from Home's activity until restored.

Restore from Trash

Select Settings at the bottom of the sidebar, then Trash in the Settings navigation. Select Restore next to the page.

Pin pages

Choose Pin to top in Page options (the ⋯ at the end of the page's row). Choose Unpin there to remove a pin. Open Pages to find them under Pinned, above that workspace's page tree. Pins are yours alone: pinning doesn't change anyone else's sidebar.

On a phone, open Page options (the ⋯ on the page's row) to pin or unpin the page.

Pin the handful of pages you open every day. Your Pinned list stays short and yours alone.

Icons and colors

Select the icon beside a page's title (Change page icon). Search for an icon with Search icons…, or choose Automatic for the standard page icon. The icon shows in the sidebar, search, and everywhere else the page is listed. Like the title, a new icon is part of your draft until you publish. Page icon color selection is temporarily unavailable.

Site admins can set the site's own icon and color: open Settings, then General, choose the Site icon, and select Save changes.
